Major
Changes to
Navigation Event
As A Result of New Rules
Monroe, LA - At the Spring NIFA Council meeting in early May, the council adopted changes to the rules for the Navigation Event. Below are the major changes to the Navigation event as a result of the rule changes.
• Prohibition of electronic devices (avionics) has been removed • A penalty for underestimation of fuel is now in effect. Previously we allowed a 10% window for underestimation. • Fuel penalty is now calculated exponentially vs. linear in the previous rules. This explanation is included in the next version of the Judges Manual. • Deviation from planned groundspeed to actual flown ground speed has been added as a scoring parameter. • Missed checkpoint penalty has been changed from 600 points to a variable scale anytime the flight is outside the .75 mile radius. See explanation in the Judges Manual. • Missed checkpoint penalty has been changed from 600 points to a variable scale anytime the flight is outside the .75 mile radius. See explanation in the Judges Manual. • Additionally, this symbol or geographic reference when seen must be recorded on the sectional used by the contestant. • A choice of true airspeeds will be offered by the Chief Judge e.g 85kts, 95kts, 105kts, 120kts…... We have been doing this over the past 5 years and now specify it in the rules. • Scoring parameters for this event may include penalty points for altitude and course metrics. • Failure to plot within 2nm on sectional will result in DQ. • Exceeding estimated flight time on any leg has changed from 10 minutes to 5 minutes for DQ purposes. • DQ section of the rules has been reorganized and includes many of the references that were previously located in other documents. .
