2009-2010 NIFA Student Representative
Kevin Burgess
Metropolitan State College of Denver

Kevin Burgess was born and raised in Casper, Wyoming and started dreaming of flight when he was a young child after seeing pictures of his grandfather in and around the B-17 bombers of World War II.    He graduated high school in the top ten percent of his class and moved on to complete an Associates Degree in Business Administration. Kevin then began working professionally as a corporate buyer for a major oil field production company.    The job facilitated his ability to pay for a second degree which he is working towards, an Associate Degree in Applied Science in Aviation.

Kevin began flying in September, 2002, and has been continuously flying and gaining experience ever since.  “My love of flying has led to my decision to pursue my Bachelor’s Degree in Aviation from Metropolitan State College of Denver and begin working towards a career flying helicopters for United States Coast Guard.”    Kevin is currently working on completing the last few hours needed to move on to taking the  practical test and completing his commercial pilot rating.    He will then begin work on his certified flight instructor ratings, which will complete his bachelor’s degree requirements.  “I am currently a senior and plan on having my ratings completed by the end of the December, 2010.”

“I have had the opportunity to engage in many diverse experiences in my life and feel that all of these experiences combined will lead me to become the best pilot I can be.”  Kevin has worked for many years in retail business gaining experience working with the public and communicating with them.    During his three years professional experience as a corporate buyer, Kevin learned the finer points of the business world and how meetings and the management structure truly works.    He has also served as a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician for eight years, and three years as a wild land and structure firefighter where he learned resource management and multi-agency communications.   For the last four years, Kevin has worked as a mechanic and manager/ shop foreman of an oilfield repair company, learning how to lead and manage a work crew, time management, resources and financial responsibilities.
